The primary focus of the doctoral programme in Fine Arts is to explore the possibilities and forms of free artistic creation in public space, as well as closely related research aimed at interpreting and contextualizing the development of contemporary artistic expressions that emphasize interaction with environmental, urban, architectural, social, and community contexts. The doctoral programme focuses on deepening the understanding and strengthening the relevance of complex artistic interventions in public space, which can energize existing physical and conceptual networks as inspirational points that counterbalance the prevailing utilitarian tendencies of the contemporary globalized world. At the same time, however, they can respond to the fluidity of our times by realizing artistic projects that need not necessarily be permanent in nature. Such a form of critical artistic thinking is thus directly linked to the co-creation of a social, spiritual, and physical space that is shared by the community and provides inspiration to its surroundings. Public space itself is currently undergoing dramatic transformations, and artistic creation plays a significant role in these changes, particularly in the virtual realm of public space. The hybrid interconnection of virtual and real space opens up a broad field of activity for concepts and expressions of public (civic) activities and initiatives. To address this socially influential state of flux, we must seek appropriate forms of sociocultural interpretation and artistic representation; and it is precisely in this sense that comprehensive artistic thinking offers a meaningful way to navigate these complex issues without succumbing to reductive perspectives. Such a form of reflective-creative thinking expresses the ambiguous relationships between social events and art, private and publicly shared spaces, and all the circumstances of their mutual interaction. The Fine Arts doctoral programme explores the strategies and functions of art in public space, as well as the conditions of its reception and critique. It encompasses knowledge of the social, cultural, and artistic infrastructure of community and societal environments. The fundamental contribution of the Fine Arts doctoral programme is evident in the synthetic interconnection of the artistic disciplines represented at the Faculty of Arts and Architecture at TUL (art, architecture, urbanism) through the design and implementation of independent artistic concepts and projects within the context of environmental contexts, urban complexes, society, and the media. In this sense, doctoral study in the Fine Arts programme emphasizes two fundamental interdisciplinary research levels —namely, research through artistic creation that actively reflects diverse aspects of the surrounding social reality within a broadly understood public space, and follow-up research that interprets these artistic expressions and trends and situates them within the broader discourse of contemporary visual art.

Studium

Graduates of the doctoral programme in Fine Arts are able not only to comprehensively develop their artistic practice, but above all to interpret it theoretically and situate it within contemporary artistic and broader sociocultural contexts. Doctoral programme graduates are active and socially aware artists capable of erudite and effective communication in the field of contemporary artistic creation, with an interest in interdisciplinary collaboration on artistic projects that emphasize public space. Graduates are also prepared for independent or team-based work in the field of artistic research, understands the complex nature of artistic creation in public space, which requires the use of multidisciplinary research methods in the process of conceptual preparation and subsequent production of the artwork, and engages in theoretical reflection on current trends in contemporary art, again with an emphasis on artistic expressions focused on reflecting the diverse aspects of public space—environmental, technological, urban, social, and community. Graduates of the Fine Arts doctoral programme find employment as independent artists actively shaping the forms of contemporary fine art, and are also prepared for research work in museums and galleries focused on contemporary art, artistic work in art collectives, architectural studios, and design firms, as well as active teaching roles at art or architecture colleges. In all of these roles, graduates of the doctoral programme in Fine Arts have the potential to actively shape professional discourse in their field, participate in various forms of artistic research, and, within the framework of specific projects, develop their own comprehensively structured artistic practice focused on interacting with diverse forms and manifestations of public space.
