The interdisciplinary study programme Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials focuses on the study of the chemical or physical preparation of materials and their physical, chemical, and biological properties, with special emphasis on the preparation, characterization, and analysis of the properties of nanostructures that determine the unique and specific properties of materials. The subject of study includes the synthesis, preparation, modification, manufacturing technologies, and properties of materials in which phenomena associated with characteristic length scales in the nanoscale domain play a specific role. From these elements, structures such as sensors, electronic components, functional polymer systems, and composites are formed. This field is further expanded by knowledge in technological processing, optimization of functional and protective material properties, and their effects in the final product. An integral part of the programme is the characterization of the structure and properties of materials and processes at the nanoscale in order to understand the relationship between microstructure, properties, and function. Students also gain experience in designing experimental concepts, including statistical data processing, and are provided with language training.
A graduate of the Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials study programme acquires both theoretical knowledge and practical experience in understanding, deliberately influencing, and utilizing the relationship between the structure and properties of materials, particularly in connection with characteristic dimensions on the nanometer scale that determine these unique and specific properties. The graduate gains training in nanotechnologies where this dimensional scale is applied and is equipped with knowledge in the chemical and physical preparation of these advanced materials. Their expertise is further shaped by hands-on experience in the characterization of the physical, chemical, and biological properties of these materials. The graduate also acquires interdisciplinary knowledge extending into related fields that either stem from or are closely connected with this focus.
