Univerzita Pardubice - Fakulta filozofická
This two-year, tuition-free Master of Arts (MA) programme, taught in English, is conducted in cooperation with the Centre for Ethics as Study in Human Value, an internationally renowned research centre. The programme offers full specialisation in the two main domains of practical philosophy: ethics and political philosophy. It is ideally, but not exclusively, suited for students with a BA degree in general philosophy. The study plan uniquely combines historical and systematic approaches with a strong emphasis on contemporary and pressing issues. The problem-oriented interactive teaching encourages students to think independently and critically about phenomena that are highly relevant both within and outside academia, such as issues of marginalisation and exclusion, animal rights, nature of democracy and climate crisis. The study has a strong research orientation: Our students receive systematic training both in academic writing skills and in critical philosophical thinking to write an original MA thesis in one of the programme domains. The best graduates will be prepared to apply for PhD study at leading academic institutions or to join our vibrant multinational PhD community. Click here for more detailed information about the study plan. Students are taught and supervised by a dynamic and active team of internationally recognised researchers from the Centre for Ethics, backed by the established institutional environment of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies. We thus offer a plurality and diversity of learning experiences and innovative research perspectives, in a very creative, inspiring and welcoming environment. Click here for more information about who will teach you. From the start, our students are invited to participate in the abundant research activities of the Centre for Ethics. The Centre and its doctoral students regularly organise international conferences, workshops, and seminars with high-profile invited speakers, such as Raimond Gaita, Veena Das, John Lippitt, Cora Diamond, and Toril Moi. The Centre hosts prestigious research projects, for instance the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action fellowships. It also maintains a rich network of international collaborations with universities such as Genoa, Manchester, Åbo, Dublin, King’s College London, Melbourne, and Uppsala, ranging from joint grant projects to Erasmus partnerships. During their master’s studies, graduates acquire a broad overview of the fields of ethics, political philosophy, and related philosophical disciplines. At the same time, they develop reflective and critical knowledge within the scope of their specialized topic (as defined by their master’s thesis project) and the related philosophical focus. As a result, they are well-qualified experts capable of teaching relevant fields and courses at the undergraduate level, or, upon obtaining additional teaching qualifications, at the high school or vocational college level—both in their native language and in English. The best students may pursue an academic career by continuing their studies at the doctoral level at universities in the Czechia and abroad (thanks, among other things, to their thesis written in English). In addition to their specialized knowledge in ethics and political philosophy, graduates generally acquire the ability for systematic thinking and conceptual analysis, which is characteristic of the study of philosophy in general and is supported by an emphasis on interactive teaching methods. These skills are primarily reflected in graduates’ critical and creative thinking, their ability to engage in logical argumentation and discussion, and their ability to analyze complex texts and arguments, both in their native language and in English. A widely applicable skill in its own right is the ability to present diverse content in the form of structured critical and argumentative texts. Conceived in this way, the study of philosophy more broadly aims at the ability to reflect upon, interpret, and critically evaluate complex social and political phenomena, institutions, and ideas, which is a prerequisite for successful and flexible movement in an internationally open labor market. You will be able to more accurately describe, distinguish, and identify the essence of the cultural, social, and political problems addressed; understand the relationships between theories and ideas on the one hand, and their practical and political implementation on the other; and assist in finding innovative solutions, not only in the domestic context but primarily in the field of international cooperation. The programme’s language of instruction (English) is a significant added value to the skills described above. A very good command of the English language (both spoken and written) is a prerequisite for admission, and graduates will significantly improve this skill through two years of intensive study in English. For those whose native language is not English, this represents a valuable professional skill in itself; at the same time, it will significantly enable them to pursue the range of professions for which the programme qualifies them in an internationally open job market. Furthermore, the English-language programme is conducted within a highly diverse international community of students and faculty, which in itself enhances students’ prospects for future success in a globalized society.
