The Department of Middle Eastern Studies educates experts who are able to defend the interests of Czechia in relation to the Middle East and North Africa. This interdisciplinary follow-up Master’s degree programme educates experts in the cultural diversity of the Middle East and North Africa. After graduation, you can find employment in organisations and institutions focused on the Middle East or North Africa, or have the possibility to continue their studies in doctoral study programmes.

The study programme deepens factual and theoretical knowledge. Cultural phenomena, social norms, customs, values, religious ideas and symbols are identified and interpreted in a broader historical context of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Emphasis is placed on discussion about methodological issues and theories and on reflection on the current state of the relevant disciplines. Optional courses are focused on Islam, Judaism and ancient religions of the Middle East. An integral part of the study programme is the study of Arabic, modern Hebrew, Persian or Akkadian. Students carry out independent field research activities. After graduation, you can work in professional organisations and research institutes, or have the possibility to continue their studies in doctoral programmes focused on anthropology, ethnology, history, or religion. They can work in public and private organisations, as well as in institutions and companies that establish cultural, commercial, humanitarian and scientific contacts with individual states of the Middle East and North Africa.
