University of West Bohemia - Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art
Interdisciplinary Research through Visual Arts is a standard three-year doctoral full-time study programme for artists interested in their own creative work and its deeper reflection as well as for researchers interested in a deeper reflection which they can verify through their own artistic work. Detailed information on the study programme and the application process is available at the Faculty website under STUDY – DOCTORAL STUDIES.
The study programme will provide you with expertise in the research of visual arts in an interdisciplinary context. The programme is based on the social demand for the development and support of creativity, responding particularly to the turbulent development of visual culture and communication. Research activities rest upon the idea that visual art is not lead only by the purposes and goals of aesthetic impact, however closely they are linked with the creation of visual art on the subjective level. Visual art plays an important pragmatic role in constituting and developing the cognitive potential of our society – be it in relation to the reality that surrounds us (objective – ontological conditions) or in relation to the creation and structuring of symbolical instruments that we use to discover or understand this reality (intersubjective – epistemological conditions). Research is by nature profoundly experimental. By creating innovative visual signs and sign systems, and through their communication potential, research contributes substantially to the cooperation and coordination functions that form the society and its culture, or, more precisely, its subcultures. This process provides the individual with a cognitive tool that influences his or her means of visual perception and the thinking linked with it. A reflective approach to this instrument allows the students to move from instinctive to conscious perception and to the social utilization of art. Graduates of this programme find a wide range of professional opportunities in basic and applied research both in the public and private sectors as well as in academia and various companies and institutions concerned with art.
