VŠB - Technical University of Ostrava - Faculty of Mechanical Engineering
We are energy engineers, but we are just as committed to environmental protection as we are to industry. Energy is one of the major challenges of the modern world, and for us it is more than just a profession – it is a mission. We focus on emerging technologies and on achieving greater energy efficiency and sustainability. You will learn how to design and operate energy systems and equipment across a wide range of industries, from power generation to food processing and mechanical engineering. Part of your student life can be spent abroad, giving you the opportunity to discover how countries such as the United States, Norway, or Spain address energy-related challenges. As a graduate of this programme, you will find career opportunities in virtually any sector you can imagine. Energy is an essential part of everyday life – it powers our devices, heats our homes, and supports modern society. Because qualified energy engineers are in high demand, not only power plants and energy companies but also a wide range of industrial enterprises are actively seeking graduates in this field. This means that excellent career prospects await you after graduation.
Graduates of the study programme will be specialists with expertise in the operation, design, and control of energy equipment and systems, both in the field of large-scale power engineering and in industrial and municipal energy applications. They will possess knowledge of energy resources, energy production and conversion processes, including heat sharing and combustion technologies, as well as fundamentals of electrical engineering. Graduates will also understand the broader relationship between society and energy practice, including the role of the energy sector in modern society and the importance of energy security. Graduates will be able to use professional terminology and prepare technical documentation in the field of energy engineering. They will be capable of interpreting technical drawings and will acquire knowledge of the principal engineering methods used in the discipline, such as the preparation of energy balances and the assessment of the energy demand of processes. They will be able to apply selected methods and their basic variants in practical applications. Furthermore, graduates will be capable of designing, implementing, and evaluating energy-related installations, including energy systems, and assessing their efficiency. Graduates will also be able to present the results of energy measurements in the form of professional technical reports and participate in innovation activities within the energy sector. Through elective courses within the Operation of Energy Equipment specialization, graduates will acquire the ability to perform basic diagnostic measurements of energy equipment, analyse the utilization of energy resources, and carry out basic calculations related to nuclear power engineering facilities. Through elective courses within the Environmental Protection Technology specialization, graduates will acquire the competencies necessary to address technical problems associated with waste management and the environmental aspects of energy systems. They will understand the impact of energy-related activities on the environment and will be able to propose solutions involving the utilization of alternative energy sources.
