The newly conceived study programme builds on the traditional study of the scientific discipline of mineral processing, which has been taught at the faculty since its establishment. It is a unique field enabling the acquisition of professional competence for managerial positions in operations engaged in the processing of mineral and secondary raw materials; furthermore, a graduate of the study programme may apply for recognition of education pursuant to Decree No. 480/2025 Coll., on the equivalence of education of officials of territorial self-governing units, for administrative activity in waste management. In the Czech Republic, a field structured in this manner can be studied only at the Faculty of Mining and Geology of VSB – Technical University of Ostrava. Owing to high-quality theoretical education and the universal foundation of application-oriented specialised study, the graduate is ensured a high degree of adaptability to all specific requirements of their future professional practice, both operational-engineering and scientific-research. Graduates will find employment as managers and technologists in companies engaged in the extraction, processing, beneficiation and utilisation of mineral raw materials. They are further employed in organisations devoted to the collection, gathering and processing of waste, in research and design institutes, and also in state and public administration bodies, including ministries, regional and municipal authorities, units of the rescue system and customs authorities. The qualification obtained enables graduates to conduct independent business activities in the field of extraction and processing of raw materials and waste. A graduate profiled in such a comprehensive manner corresponds to the needs of practice. The graduate will be prepared for the needs of practice through the solving of case studies and through an extended qualification comprising “commercial professional courses”. Graduates are also prepared to continue further in doctoral study programmes, in particular in the doctoral study programme Mineral Processing, or, as applicable, Environmental Protection in Industry at the Department of Environmental Engineering.
