Safety: A Refreshing Reality 

One of the first things I noticed in Czechia is just how safe it feels to be a woman here. There’s a joke that Czechia’s “sketchy places” are equivalent to the safest, most well-lit areas in other countries—and honestly, it’s true. 

Back home, I used to carry pepper spray and a small pocketknife wherever I went, especially if I was walking alone at night. Here, I’ve completely ditched both. I regularly walk home after dark, whether from a friend’s place or a late class, and I’ve never felt unsafe. There’s a general sense of calm and security, even in the larger cities like Prague, which is something I don’t take for granted. 

Of course, this doesn’t mean that bad things never happen, but compared to many other countries, Czechia’s commitment to public safety is remarkable. It’s always good to know the emergency numbers: 112 (EU-wide emergency line) and 158 (Czech police). 

Menstruation Products: Affordable and Accessible 

Another thing that stands out is how affordable and accessible menstruation products are. You can find them in nearly every shop, from big supermarkets to tiny convenience stores, and the prices are reasonable. Even better, many university campuses provide menstruation products for free, often in bathrooms or at designated stations. It’s a small gesture that makes a big difference, especially for students who may be caught off guard. 

This accessibility removes a layer of stress that women in other countries often face, where either the products are overpriced or hard to find. 

Fashion: Fat-Friendly and Inclusive 

As someone who wears a size 48 (which translates roughly to XXL in international sizing), I’ve always had a hard time finding clothes that fit well and feel good. But Czechia has been a pleasant surprise in this regard. 

Most stores here cater to a range of sizes, and I’ve rarely found myself at the largest end of the spectrum. Whether I’m shopping for casual wear, professional outfits, or activewear, I’ve been able to find clothes that suit me. It’s refreshing not to feel excluded or like an afterthought in the fashion world. 

This inclusivity in fashion makes a big difference—it’s a quiet but powerful way of saying, “You belong.” 

Activities for Women, by Women 

Czechia is also rich in women-focused activities and communities, which can make a huge difference for anyone looking to connect with others. 

There are plenty of options, from women-only yoga and walking groups to book clubs and social meetups. If you’re looking for something more casual, there are mixed-gender groups as well, but the variety of women-led spaces is impressive. These groups create safe and welcoming environments where you can try new things, make friends, and build a sense of community. For me, they’ve been a great way to meet like-minded women and find support while living abroad.

Being a woman in Czechia has been a refreshing and empowering experience. Whether it’s walking home at night without fear, easily accessing menstruation products, finding clothes that fit, or connecting with other women through various activities, Czechia offers a lot to support and uplift women.
